Bridging Generations of Energy Expertise
How Nexos Apprentices Are Learning from the Past to Shape the Future
At nexos, we believe the key to a successful energy transition lies not in discarding the past, but in building upon the deep expertise developed over decades in the oil and gas sector. With an evolving energy landscape, our apprentices are uniquely positioned to harness the lessons learned from traditional energy markets while pioneering innovative solutions in emerging and alternative energy sectors.
Learning from the Best: The Legacy of Oil & Gas Expertise
For decades, nexos has been at the forefront of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) in the oil and gas industry. Our teams have worked on complex offshore and onshore projects, refining processes, optimising efficiency, and developing industry-leading safety protocols. This vast reservoir of experience provides an invaluable training ground for our apprentices, equipping them with the foundational knowledge that underpins all aspects of energy infrastructure and operations.
From pipeline integrity and asset life extension to decommissioning projects, our apprentices gain first-hand exposure to the meticulous planning and execution required in large-scale energy projects. They are mentored by seasoned industry professionals who have spent years perfecting their craft, ensuring that critical skills such as risk management, regulatory compliance, and process optimisation are passed down to the next generation.
Pivoting with Precision: Translating Knowledge into New Energy Markets
As nexos continues to expand its footprint into alternative energy markets—including offshore wind, hydrogen production, carbon capture, and sustainable modular solutions—our apprentices are at the heart of this transformation. Rather than treating traditional and new energy sectors as separate entities, we leverage the cross-disciplinary expertise of our teams to create a seamless transition between industries.
For example, the structural engineering principles used in offshore oil platforms are directly applicable to offshore wind turbine foundations. Similarly, the rigorous safety standards developed for gas processing facilities inform the design and operation of hydrogen production plants. By immersing our apprentices in both sectors, we ensure they develop a holistic understanding of energy systems, making them adaptable and future-ready professionals.
Hands-On Experience: The Nexos Approach to Training
At nexos, we don’t believe in passive learning. Our apprenticeship programs emphasise hands-on experience, where apprentices actively contribute to live projects across both traditional and new energy markets. Whether it’s working on the installation of an offshore modular solution, assisting in the decommissioning of a legacy oil and gas asset, or fabricating piping and structural steel components in our workshops, they gain real-world exposure to the full energy lifecycle.
Our apprentices working in the workshops develop critical skills in welding, machining, and assembling components that support offshore and onshore energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, our electrical apprentices gain expertise in modular builds, learning how to wire, test, and integrate electrical systems that will power next-generation energy solutions. This diverse experience ensures they are equipped to meet the evolving demands of the energy sector.
Each year, nexos welcomes an intake of early careers and in 2024 they had more than 10 apprentices,, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled professionals ready to drive the energy industry forward. By rotating across different projects, our apprentices gain insights into multiple disciplines, from electrical and mechanical engineering to digital modelling and sustainability assessments. They also benefit from mentorship programs that connect them with senior engineers, fostering knowledge-sharing and collaboration.
Shaping the Future Energy Workforce
Energy transition isn’t just about technology—it’s about people. At nexos, we recognise that the future of the industry depends on developing a workforce that is as versatile as it is skilled. Our apprenticeship programs are designed to cultivate professionals who not only understand the technical nuances of both traditional and new energy but also have the critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to drive continuous innovation.
By blending legacy expertise with cutting-edge advancements, nexos apprentices are not just learning about the energy industry—they are shaping its future. With a unique mix of experience, adaptability, and fresh perspective, they represent the next generation of energy leaders, ready to take on the challenges of a rapidly evolving world.
At nexos, we are not just bridging the gap between past and future—we are building the bridge itself, ensuring that our apprentices stand on a foundation of knowledge strong enough to support the energy industry’s bold new direction.
